Are Magnets Really a Pain Cure?

Magnets have been the rage for at least 20 years on our culture as a way
to cure body aches and pains. They are said to cure back pain, arthritis,
cancer and depression. This has been such a popular pain cure that we can
find many articles in magazines and on television. In this article we
delve deeper to find out if magnets are really a pain cure, and how they
help.
Although we have known about magnets for these short years the use of
magnets as a pain cure, dates back to ancient Greece. People were using
this cure then for the same reasons, with many good results. In fact,
people believe so wholeheartedly in magnets that they now make up a $5
billion dollar industry.
For many people the only way that they will believe in something like this
is if it is scientifically proven, but not everything can be put into a
test tube. Although many studies have looked at this process most have
been inconclusive as to whether magnets work as a pain cure.
The University of Virginia Study
As people continue to research, the University of Virginia has found
conclusive evidence that magnets can at least increase the flow of blood
and provide more oxygen to damaged tissue.
Researchers found that by just using a mild magnetic field, they could
increase blood flow and suppress inflammation. The magnets cause small
blood vessels to constrict and dilate, causing the increased blood flow –
at least in rats. They are hoping to start clinical trials with humans
soon.
Magnets and Inflammation
In many cases people say thatmagnetic treatments reduce swelling and
inflammation in joints and other tissue. If this is so then people can
recover from injury faster. This is one of the premises of the Virginia
study because they want to be able to show that this could help athletes
and conditions that are prone to swelling. Consumers who see magnets as a
pain cure experience less swelling in their legs hands or joints when they
have arthritis.
Some researchers say this could revolutionize healing, and change the way
that some look at healthcare for pain cure. Besides recovering faster it
is easier to carry a magnet in a book bag than it is to carry an ice pack.
The Skeptics and Magnets for Pain Cure
There are still many skeptics who do not believe that magnets can cure
pain. They say this is more about the fact that people believe it can help
rather than the fact that they actually do. Although this may be true,
billions of people have the same belief and there are many people who will
not go without their magnets in their shoes or on their arms.
Do Some Types of Magnets Work Better Than Others?
So far, the jury is out as to if one type of magnet works over another.
The fact is that simple magnets that you can buy in any store work as well
as those that you can find as bracelets or even in mattress pads. It must
be working for some people, or they wouldn’t spend the money.
